Mapping the Real and the Imagined

My project at MAM Chiloe yielded a mind map – a kind of memory of the process itself – an interactive installation, a subjective-collective map of the Island of Chiloe and the surrounding archipelago.

Its initial elements were established by two groups: one from the hospital of Chiloe, individuals living with physical and/or mental difficulties and a group of local art brut artist. It was important for me to put these groups into this position of power where they can establish a map. The map, as interactive installation stayed available for the visitors of the museum for three weeks. They could add their, somewhat ephemeral, memories – on post-it notes – related to places on the archipelago.

As the glue on the post-it notes gave up they started falling off the map, coinciding with the beginning of autumn in Chiloé.

The project was developed in collaboration with Gustavo Yáñez and Manon Gorteau, with the help of Manuela Véjar.

Very special thanks for the feedback to Anaïs Roca and Zsuzsa Mekler.
